Hedgehogs

We love these photos of prickly hedgehogs by Ann and Steve Toon. The Toons can often be found exploring the African wildernesses in search of exotic wildlife, but here they’ve turned their lenses upon one of the UK’s most endearing garden mammals. Read more of Ann and Steve Toon’s work here.

Abbots Bromley Horn Dance

This Monday (8th September) saw residents of the village of Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire perform the eccentric Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, an English folk tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. The dancers make their way around the village wearing reindeer antlers accompanied by a hobby horse, a woman dressed as Maid Marion, a jester and an accordion player.

Cotswolds in pictures

The Cotswold region is one of England’s favourite destinations with country churches, pretty limestone villages and peaceful meadows. Top landscape photographer Adam Burton took these beautiful photos.

Beltane – Celtic May Day

Beltane, or Celtic Mayday, marks the beginning of summer. It is a fertility ritual that was performed by pre-Christian Britons while accompanying the herds into the open fields for the first time in the year. It is still celebrated in some parts of the UK, like in this increasingly popular event in Hampshire, England, photographed by Phil Clarke-Hill.

Best beach huts

Wooden beach huts have existed since the late 19th Century in Australia, England, France and Italy. They evolved from the ‘bathing machine’, a mobile changing room that preserved the modesty of Victorian bathers, and they continue to brighten up our sea fronts. Here are some of our favourites, as captured by our photographers.
