Il Palio is a horse race held twice a year in which ten bareback jockeys ride furiously around the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy. Dramatic turns often mean that riders are thrown from their horses, who are left to finish the race alone.

This week (starting on the 11th July) Mongolia’s traditional festival, Naadam, whips the country into a frenzy of colourful costume parades, horse racing, archery and Mongolian wrestling contests. We chose some of our favourite pictures of this midsummer fun.

Every year in late December thousands flock to the desert oasis town of Douz in southern Tunisia, for the country’s oldest and best known festival. Camel marathons, poetry readings, horse races and dancing entertain the crowds. All photos by age fotostock/Robert Harding
